Encounter 001

Mixed media, 2020

30 x 14 x 18 (cm)

Encounter 001 is a work created in response to the exhibition titled “Rendezvous” that it was to be exhibited in. The meaning of Rendezvous is understood as a meeting at an agreed time and place. As the work is to be placed in the exhibition that also marks the re-opening of the location since Covid-19 Circuit Breaker period in Singapore, the artist reflects upon a common sighting for her that has replaced the original human connections during that period of time.

It came about from a night stroll in humid weather and while using phone, the artist stepped and crushed a snail by accident. For the latter nights, the artist would walk while having the consciousness to look at the ground and if chanced upon a snail, to pick it and put it away from the walking pavements. This encounter has since sparked the start of a series of Encounter works by the artist that uses the form of snail as a representation of her memories.

For Encounter 001 which is also the first of the series, it represents the sacrificial attempt by one of the snail secret agents to reconnect humans back into the physical world.
